Ceramic tile: not just for walls and floors

We're not just leaders in flooring and window coverings, but you can also count on us to construct quality custom showers. We have to talk about tile here because many think of a ceramic as something for floors, walls or backsplashes. It also makes terrific shower walls and surrounds. There's such a wide variety of ceramics you can get any look, from a spa bathroom to a luxurious and elegant marble one.

Is porcelain ceramic?

It is a type of ceramic. It is made of fine clay, and its composition also includes sand and glass. That makes it heavier and denser. As a ceramic floor tile, it is best for busy rooms like the kitchen or bath. It is waterproof, weather-resistant, and can be used indoors or out. However, it's also great for walls and tub/shower surrounds.

Porcelain is a large format tile that comes in a wide assortment of colors and patterns. It can be made to look like anything, from wood to brick and concrete so you can create any atmosphere. For example, a wood-look tile shower and the floor will create an outdoorsy feeling.

Ceramic tiles

These are highly decorative pieces and come in all shapes and sizes. They include the squares with which we're all familiar, as well as mosaics and subway tiles. Like porcelain, you can design any look, such as a tile shower wall with a marble-tiled floor to give a luxurious spa atmosphere.

Ceramics come either glazed or unglazed and are durable no matter what the size. Don't be fooled by that tiny mosaic! It’s a powerhouse of strength and almost impossible to break.

Fun bathroom trends with tile

Mix and match. Have fun with the variety! Coordinate colors, shapes, and sizes to create a unique pattern. Even subways, the formerly all-white, rectangles now come in all colors and shapes such as round, oval, diamond, and more. Black and white stenciled appearances for a vintage or farmhouse look are ultra-chic. They come in all patterns from florals to Moroccan or Roman-themed. Mosaics are big this year, as are patterns and textures. You'll see herringbones, geometrics, florals, chevrons, basket weaves, etc. as well as tile that looks like fabric and leather.
